The Xbox 360 Slim is the popular new version of the classic Xbox 360 game console, with a number of new features. Among the many upgrades there are new ports, like one for the Kinect, new design features, faster processer and much more. However, one question on long-time Xbox gamers' lips is whether it'll solve the issue known as the "Red Ring of Death."
What is the RROD?
The RRoD is a problem with certain generations of the Xbox 360. When it happens, three of the four quadrants light up, which means that there has been a general hardware failure, and you console will need to be fixed. This is not to be confused with
The lights do this to let you know something is wrong. You may start experiencing crashes or shutdowns before you get the RROD. Regrettably, many gamers have to send their consoles to Microsoft to get it fixed. Microsoft often holds consoles for up to 2 months while the Xbox is fixed.
What About the Xbox 360 Slim?
Technically, there is no Red Ring of Death in the new slim console. This is because Microsoft has changed the way in which errors are now reported. Instead of red lights, there is now a red flash on the on button when you get an error.
Like all machines, the Xbox Slim is not fail-proof. The error rate is down compared to the older console generations, like the Xenon.
Reasons why the failure rate is now a lot lower is due to the fact that overheating is not so much of an issue as it once was (with better fan systems), and that the new error system shuts down the console during critical times, preventing damage from occurring.
Should This Influence Your Decision As to Which Console to Buy?
The Yellow Light of Death on the PS3 and sometimes on the PS3 Slim is a frequently used comparison point. The failure rates of the Playstation were known to be lower, but with the newest Xbox release, they are now more even in that respect. I personally always choose an Xbox, but to be true, that is probably because I am what most people would call "An Xbox Fanboy".
Like any device, the Xbox Slim can fail! No games console or any piece of electronic equipment is fail proof! But the Xbox Slim has a warranty, like other consoles, to make sure you can game in peace!
